Arif Malikov son of Jahangir was born in Baku. He studied at the music school named after Asaf Zeynalli (1948), Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1953-1958, class of Gara Garayev). For some time he taught at a music school in Shusha. Already in the first year of the conservatory, he wrote works for piano, violin and quartet. Composer Dmitri Shostakovich, who participated in the first congress of Azerbaijani composers in 1956, highly appreciated his talent. The ballets “7 Beautiful” and “Lightning Roads” staged in these years had a decisive influence on his future creativity. The first performance of the ballet “The Legend of Love” took place in 1961 at the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater. After that, the ballet began to travel around the world and was performed on the stages of 63 countries. His creativity covers various genres. He is the author of the ballet “Legend of Love”, the symphonic poems “Fairy Tale”, “Fuzuli”, “Homeland”, “Metamorphoses”, “The Last Pass”, and six symphonies. He is the composer of the films- “Epic about Rustam” (1971, directed by Bension Kimyagarov / Tajikistan), “Matters of the Heart” (1973, directed by Ajdar Ibrahimov / Russia), “Ali Shimshekli Atli” (1975, directed by Hasan Hajigasimov / Russia), “Rustam and Sohrab” (1976, directed by Bension Kimyagarov / Tajikistan).

Since 1958, he started teaching at the Baku Music Academy, worked as a professor (1979) and head of the composition department. He was a full member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (2014). Arif Malikov, laureate of the state prize (1986), laureate of the “Istiglal” (1998) and “Heydar Aliyev” orders (2013), Honored Art Worker (1965), Azerbaijan (1978) and People’s Artist of the USSR (1986) died in 2019.
