Rafig Safar oglu Guliyev was born in Baku. He studied at the cultural and educational faculty of the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts (1976-1981), at the cinematography faculty of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow (1982-1987, V. Monakhov and V. Nakhabtsev’s workshop).

In Russia, he participated in the filming of several films as a film director: “The Traitor” (1983), “The First Role” (1984), “The Bomb” (1985), “Daffodils” (1986), “The Vision of Young Mikhail” (1987, director Mikhail Kosyrev), “Russia” (1987, directed by Murad Ibrahimbeyov, “Руся”), “The Path” (1995, directed by Mikhail Kosyrev-Nesterov).

Since 1974, he worked as a cinematographer’s assistant, cinematographer, cinematographer, and director at the “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio. Under the condition of continuing his creative activities in the film studio, he worked as a television director in the Azerbaijani representation of Turkey’s Samanyolu TV channel (1999-2001). He created the editorial office of “Azerbaijan” on “Leader” television. He organized the production of 237 television films in the institution he headed, and directed dozens of films as a director and director of photography (2001-2004).

Participated in competition programs of international festivals and received important awards. He was a member and chairman of the jury. He worked on more than 20 feature films and more than 100 documentaries as a director, cinematographer and screenwriter.

Since 1997, he has been engaged in teaching activities at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts. Having defended his candidate’s thesis on the topic “Image heritage of Azerbaijani silent cinema”, he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in art studies (2008), associate professor (2005), professor (2016). Since 2015, he is the head of the “Cinema and Television Arts” department. He is the author of dozens of scientific articles, educational programs and methodological instructions, teaching aids and textbooks. Honored artist (2005). Awarded the Order of “Fame” (2018).

Rafiq Guliyev is a member of Azerbaijan Professional Film Directors Guild, European Film Academy.
