Eldar Guliyev
director, screenwriter, producer

Eldar Tofig oglu Guliyev was born on January 18, 1941 in Baku. In 1960-1967, he studied at the directing faculty of the Moscow All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. In the 1st year, he studied in the documentary film class of Roman Karmen, and then in the feature film class of Sergey Gerasimov. He has been working at “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio since 1967. He is the author of many fiction and documentary films. He is also the scriptwriter of many films. He played the role of an official in the Russian film “Count Krestovsky” (2004, directed by Ramiz Fataliyev/Russia). Several of his films have been awarded at film festivals. He is the laureate of the Republic State Prize, the People’s Artist of Azerbaijan. Since 1987, he has been the artistic director of the “Debut” studio, the Honorary President of the Azerbaijan Professional Film Directors Guild, the professor of the cinema department at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts. His creativity is rich in various topics and genres. The innovation of the film “In a southern city” in the history of Azerbaijani cinema is evident in its way of thinking and artistic-aesthetic form. “According to the genre of the film, it is a comedy – more precisely, a tragicomedy of spirituality. It is not right to look for the exotic here, it is first of all a clearly shown reality, a clear observation of the environment, the ability to approach with thought. The exact idea, spirituality is a position” (Yuri Khanyutin). Eldar Guliyev was awarded the honorary titles of Honored Art Worker (1976), State Prize Laureate (1978), People’s Artist (1983), “National Cinema” Award of the Union of Cinematographers of the Republic of Azerbaijan (2016), “Golden Sycamore” International Award (2018). Director Eldar Guliyev died on April 16, 2021.
Director Eldar Guliyev is the son of composer Tofig Guliyev.
Director Eldar Guliyev is the father of screenwriter Narmina Guliyeva.
