Nizami Veli oglu Abbas (Nizami Abbasov) was born in Bayramli village of Shamkir region. He studied at the cinematography faculty of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (1988). He started his first career at “Lenfilm” (1974-1975, Russia) as an assistant cameraman. Since 1976, he worked at “Azerbaijanfilm” and later at “Yaddash” studio. In 1991, he voluntarily went to the front and filmed in war zones. For some time he was the artistic director of the “Documentary Cinema-Television Studio” of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1992-1998). First, he worked as a cinematographer, then as a director. Since 2005, he has been leading the studio “Yurdfilm” founded by himself. Honored Worker of Arts (2007). In 2015, Nizami Abbas’s film “Balaban” was awarded the “Golden Fairy” award of the Azerbaijan Film Academy in the nomination “Best Director’s Work” in a documentary film.

Nizami Abbas was a member of the jury of many international film festivals. Nizami Abbas is a member of the Board of the Azerbaijan Professional Film Directors Guild and the European Film Academy. Director Nizami Abbas I is a veteran of the Karabakh war.

Director, cinematographer Nizami Abbas is the father of cinematographer Uzeyir Abbas.
