Vasif Babayev son of Hajiaga was born in Baku. He studied at the Azerbaijan State Theater Institute named after M.A. Aliyev (1958-1965), at the Higher Television Director courses at Leningrad Television (1966). He first worked as an assistant director, then assistant director, director (1964-1969), chief director (1969-1991), artistic director (1991-1994) at the Azerbaijan State Television and Radio Broadcasting Committee. He was the director of the Azerbaijan branch of the “MIR” Interstate Television and Radio Company (1994-1995), the executive director of the “SARA” Independent Television and Radio Company (1996-1999), and the vice-president of the Russian “Inter-AZ” Independent Television and Radio Company in Moscow (2001-2006). He was the producer and director of dozens of wide-format “New Year: Blue Light” television programs and holiday programs (1969-1987).

Together with journalist Nadezhda Ismayilova, for the first time in the history of cinema and television, conducting research in the archives of the Soviet Azerbaijan Central Committee, “Mikayil Mushfig”, “Abbas Mirza Sharifzadeh”, “Ulvi Rajab”, Ruhulla Akhundov”, “Huseyn Rahmanov”, “Salman Mumtaz” paved the way for the preparation of a series of programs based on the personal affairs of “political prisoners” (1987).In 1969-1982, he was the leading director of important state and government events, television programs, broadcasts and live broadcast programs held with the participation of Heydar Aliyev. He is one of the creators of television and film chronicles of National Leader Heydar Aliyev.In 1972-1987, he was the author and director of two-hour films about Azerbaijan, which were broadcast to Europe and socialist states by the Intervision system of the Central Television of the USSR. He was director of series of programs about writers, poets, composers, artists broadcast on various television channels, “A leaf from every sycamore”, “Song travels through the city”, “Jazz monologue”, “Dreams” musical mail, “Dalga”, “Meetings, memories”, ” From Saturday to Saturday”, “Druzhba studio”, “24 hours”, “Asiman”, “Singing garden”, “17th floor”, “Chance market”, “Courtesy”, “Wishes, congratulations”, “Shurum-burum” , “Resonance”, “Week”, “Seven days”, “Contact”, “Sara-khabar”, “Dedim-dedi”, “Inter-Diaspora” programs. In 1967-1992, he filmed in foreign countries such as Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Austria, Hungary, Greece, Turkey, Malta, Spain, France, Italy, Iran, and produced TV shows and movies. He is the author and director of more than 40 documentaries

For his films, he was awarded the prizes of various international and All-Union festivals: 1. For the film “Coastal garden” the award in the debut nomination at the “Prometheus 67” Zone Film Festival (1967, Kyiv), the jury award at the 1st All-Union television film festival (1968, Moscow)2. Diploma at the “Prometey-69” Film Festival for the film “Land of Golden Roses” (1969, Tbilisi).3. The film “Soviet Azerbaijan” was awarded by the Union of Journalists of the USSR at the All-Union Television Film Festival (1977, Leningrad).4. The film “Sheki” received the prize of the city of Nakhodka at the All-Union Television Film Festival (1978, Vladivostok).5. The film “Khuraman” received the “Grand Prix” for the first time in the history of Azerbaijani cinema at the All-Union Television Film Festival (1979, Baku).6. The film “Azerbaijan is moving forward with great strides” was awarded the special prize of the Jury at that Festival.7. The film “Moment of Truth” received a diploma at the All-Union Television Film Festival (1985, Kyiv).8. Worked as a member of the jury and expert commissions at various festivals: worked as a member of the jury at the All-Union Festivals held in Vladivostok (1978), Baku (1979), Yerevan (1981), Alma-Ata (1983), Kiev (1985).9. He was awarded the Order of Honor of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR (1967). “Superior of Television and Radio of the USSR” (1981). 12. While working as the director of the Azerbaijan Representative Office of the “MIR” Interstate Television and Radio Company, the representative office was awarded the international “Humay” award (1994). 13. Awarded with the Diploma of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in the Russian Federation (2015) for the film “Rise”. 16. “Simurg” was awarded the honorary title of “Culture Ambassador” by the Association of Azerbaijani Culture for his services in the development of Azerbaijani culture (2016). 17. With the Honorary Decree of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan “For many years of work and service in the field of national cinema” (2018), 18. He was awarded a Diploma (2018) by the Foundation named after National Hero Chingiz Mustafayev “for his significant and invaluable services for the progress of the country”. 19. Awarded the “Golden Fairy” Professional Award of the Azerbaijan Film Academy in the nomination “For contributions to the development of national television” (2018). He is an academician of the International Television and Radio Academy, an individual scholarship holder of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He is a member of Azerbaijan Union of Cinematographers (1973), Azerbaijan Professional Film Directors Guild (2000). Honored Artist of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1977), People’s Artist (1989). He is the first television director in the Republic to be awarded the honorary title of “People’s Artist” of Azerbaijan.Director Vasif Babayev is the brother of director Arif Babayev.
